Project Home

Each night during the month of November we provide two evening hosts (5:30—8:30 pm shift) and two overnight hosts (8:00 pm to either 7:30 or 9:30 am, depending on the day.)  The evening hosts meet up with Project Home staff members to welcome and assist our guests, read and play with children, converse with parents, and serve snacks.  Overnight hosts help get the families settled in for the night and then sleep in their own private area (beds are provided; bring your own sleeping bag or blankets and pillow). In the morning our overnight hosts make sure all the families get up, eat a quick breakfast, and assist the Project Home staffers in getting the families out the door for school, work, or other activities.

One of the most peaceful ways you can volunteer is as an overnight host.  You arrive, help folks prepare for lights out, and then head upstairs to read, pray if you wish, and then sleep.  We have mattresses on frames that can be moved within the Friendship Room, you should bring your own pillow and a fitted sheet and perhaps a blanket.  To see moonlight streaming into the sanctuary is one of the most peaceful and beautiful sights you can imagine.  Then you wake up, help get a simple breakfast ready, and interact with our guests as kids prepare to go to school and parents prepare for work or meetings with support services.  A few minutes spent cleaning up and then you are back into your daily routine.  On to your usual activities – but with a greater awareness of what it means to be homeless, more people to be added to your prayers that day, and with the knowledge that you used your time to offer some hospitality.

We are also looking for volunteers to help Project Home staff move in (November 1) and move out (December 1), as well as back-up volunteers willing to serve in an on-call capacity.
